Nevada Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Series 2022

Please see information below regarding this free CME on-demand series

Overview

Multidrug-Resistant Organisms (MDROs) continue to be a threat within healthcare facilities. This series of webinars will provide education on how to establish an antimicrobial stewardship program that aids facilities in understanding MDROs, develops policies and protocols to ensure antibiotics are used responsibly based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and ensuring champions are in place to ensure the policies and protocols are utilized throughout the facility. At the conclusion of this activity, learners should have a clear understanding of antibiotic stewardship, how to develop an ASP plan for their facility type, the importance of MDRO prevention, state reporting regulations, and the importance of interfacility communication as methods of MDRO transmission prevention.

Learning Objectives

Following participation in this course series, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of antimicrobial stewardship, its policies, and protocol
  • Provide education on antimicrobial stewardship practices, development of case studies, and using case studies for quality improvement
  • Discuss State outbreak reporting protocols and interfacility communication
  • Provide education on antibiogram and laboratory microbiology terminology
  • Discuss antibiotic treatment and management for common MDROs

Preparing and Using Case Studies for Improvement in Care and Quality | Session 3

This session will provide a brief overview of how to develop a case study for presentation to your team, an example of a case study, and share highlights of how to use that case study to identify quality improvement opportunities. Participants will also hear about opportunities to present a case study to peers as part of Project ECHO Nevada virtual clinics.

Bugs & Drugs | Session 4

While Infection Prevention Programs are well-established concepts in almost all hospitals, Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs are a newer, yet equally important program for patient care and resource conservation.  These two programs are similar in their role and staff composition; however, the end products are substantially different.  This presentation will provide a short introduction to the two programs, their staffing, and their shared commonalities.

Lab & Microbiology Acronyms & Antibiograms | Session 5

The Microbiology of Antimicrobial Stewardship: Organisms, Acronyms, and Methods

Part one of this presentation discusses the organisms now commonly associated with antimicrobial resistance. The presentation reviews both new organisms and mechanisms of resistance. It reviews the methodology involved with the detection of antimicrobial resistance and explains some of the acronyms associated with antimicrobial resistance. Lastly, the presentation discusses the impact that antimicrobial resistance may have on patient care and infection control.

Antibiogram

Part two of this presentation addresses what an antibiogram is, why we need an antibiogram, and how an antibiogram is created.

Provides 1.00 hour of CE/CME credit. Online Registration for Session 5
